Media Communications Lab (MCL) led by Prof. C.-C. Jay Kuo at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering is devoted to theoretical studies and practical applications of multimedia data processing, communication and networking technologies. Current MCL's research activities include: multimedia coding, audiovisual content analysis, abstraction and management, graphic modeling and rendering, machine learning and computer vision. MCL has contributed to international standards such as JPEG2000, MPEG- 4, MPEG-7, H.263++. MCL has a close tie with the industry and has received research grants from more than 60 companies. MCL has produced about 210 journal papers, 850 conference papers and 12 research monographs over the last 25 years.
MCL has contributed to the multimedia industry via funded projects, standard activities, and supply of well-trained MS/PhD students. His lab at USC has received 150 funded projects with leading IT companies (e.g., Acer, Boeing, Conexant, Cisco, Disney, Hughes, HP, IBM, Intel, KDDI, Korean Airlines, LG Electronics, Lockheed-Martin, Mediatek, Northrop, Pratt-Whitney, Rockwell, Samsung, Sprint, Sierra Semiconductor, TRW, TCL, Verizon) and start-ups. MCL has produced about 120 PhD alumni, which ranks Professor Kuo the top advisor in the Mathematics Genealogy Project (in the number of supervised PhD students). One quarter of MCL alumni are professors in top-ranked Asian universities, e.g. the National Taiwan/Chiao-Tung/Cheng-Kung Universities (Taiwan), the Peking University (China), the Seoul National University, the Korea University (Korea), etc. Some of them work in world-class research labs, e.g. the Microsoft Lab, the IBM Watson Lab, the HP Lab, the KDDI Lab and the MERL Lab. Others work in companies as senior engineers or managers such as Acer, Apple, Boeing, Broadcom, Cisco, Google, Intel, LG Electronics, Mediatek, Microsoft, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung, etc. The large and closely bounded alumni network is one of MCL's most valuable assets.
