Lab Director (or Principal Investigator)

Dr Sumei SUN

Dr Sumei Sun is the Department Head of Modulation and Coding at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore. Her research interests lie in general digital communication systems and specifically in signal processing, coding and modulation techniques, cross layer design, and their realization in practical systems. Her recent research focus is on spectrum- and energy-efficient communications, MIMO systems, 5G transmission technologies, joint source-channel-network processing, renewable energy management and cooperation in wireless systems and networks.

She is inventor and co-inventor of over thirty patents and patent applications, many of which have been licensed to industry with multi-million dollar licensing returns. Dr Sun has authored and co-authored more than one hundred technical papers in prestigious IEEE journals and conference. She is co-recipient of IEEE PIMRC'2005 Best Paper Award.

She is serving as an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology in which role she was recognized by the Top Associate Editor in 2011 and 2012, and Editor of the inaugural IEEE Wireless Communication Letters. She also served as a guest editor for Hindawi International Journal of Antennas and Propagation, special issue on Advances in Antenna Design and System Technologies for Next Generation Cellular Systems in 2013.

Dr Sun was the TPC Chair of 12th IEEE International Conference on Communications in 2010 (ICCS 2010), General Co-Chair of 7th (2010) and 8th (2011), TPC Co-Chair of 9th (2012) IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Asia Pacific Wireless Communications Symposium (APWCS), and Track Chair of Signal Processing for Communications, Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association Annual Summit and Conference 2010 (APSIPA ASC 2010), Track co-chair of Transmission Technologies, IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) 2012 Spring, Track co-chair of Mobile Networks, Applications, Services Track, IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) 2014 Spring, co-chair of Wireless Communications track in 15th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC'12).

Lab Introduction

The Modulation & Coding department in I2R conducts scientific research in advanced technologies for next-generation wireless communications. Over the years, the team has contributed to many wireless standards in use today, including Wi-Fi and 4G. Many of the technologies and solutions developed by the team are used by the industry.

Our current focus is on fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, with an emphasis on higher capacity, higher energy efficiency, and seamless integration of machine-to-machine communications. In order to achieve this, we have been working advanced transmission technologies, multiple access techniques, cooperative communications systems as well as incentives, interference, and resource management for heterogeneous networks. We have also contributed valuable research outcomes towards the industry-wide standards, e.g., WiFi, 3GPP, etc.

Our expertise extends to hardware prototyping using FPGA and software-defined radio platforms, and have a few real-time hardware MIMO systems supporting both single-user and multi-user transmissions. We are now developing a real-time distributed antenna system prototype and an IEEE 802.11ah prototype. Also in our intellectual property (IP) portfolio are 11n/11ac chipset designs.
