Ioannis Katsavounidis received his diploma (B.S./M.S.) in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1991. He continued his studies at the Department of Electrical Engineering - Systems at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, USA, where he obtained his Master's degree, Engineer's degree and Ph.D. in 1992, 1996 and 1998 respectively. His research focused on the subject of digital signal processing and image and video compression. His academic advisor was Prof. C.-C. Jay Kuo and his Ph.D. thesis was "Image compression using wavelet transform and vector quantization".
From 1996 to 2000 he worked as an engineer for the high-energy physics experiment MACRO, at the underground physics laboratory, in Gran Sasso, Italy. From 2000 to 2007 he worked for the software company InterVideo, at the Silicon Valley area in the USA, where he was director of new technologies with emphasis on video encoders and decoders. From 2007 to 2008 he worked for Cidana, a startup company in the U.S. and Shanghai in China as Chief Technical Officer. It is worth noting that in 2004 he was elected Assistant Professor at the Computer and Communications Engineering Department at the University of Thessaly, a position which was later revoked by the Ministry of Education as "mistakenly published".
Since 2008 he is an Associate Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Thessaly. He teaches undergraduate classes in Physics, Signals and Systems, Control Systems, and advanced undergraduate/graduate classes in Digital Image Processing, Audio and Video Compression and Information Theory and Coding. His research interests lie in the areas of information theory, image processing and compression, computer vision, audio and video compression, both in terms of theory and in terms of algorithms and implementation/optimization on platforms with limited resources.
