APSIPA ASC 2018

Welcome Message from General Chairs

E Komo Mai!!! A warm Aloha to the 10th Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA) Annual Summit and Conference (ASC) 2018 to be held at the Hawai’i Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i from November 12-15, 2018.

We are pleased to host the 10th APSIPA ASC this year in the Aloha state, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean at a cross-section between Asia and North America. The theme of this year’s APSIPA ASC is on “Catching the Big Data Wave in Signal and Information Processing”. APSIPA was formally founded in 2009 with the goals of promoting research and education in signal and information processing that encompasses processing, recognition, classification, communications, networking, computing, system design, security, implementation, and technology with applications to scientific, engineering and social areas. Annual conferences have previously been held in Sapporo, Japan (2009), Singapore (2010), Xian, China (2011), Los Angeles, USA (2012), Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2013), Siem Reap, Cambodia (2014), Hong Kong (2015), Jeju, South Korea (2016), and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2017).

A special Mahalo to the entire organizing committee for their diligent and hard work to put together a great program for this year’s conference. This year we are projected to have record attendance for APSIPA ASC. This reflects our growing community and increasing interest in signal and information processing research and education. We have 4 distinguished keynote speakers, 45 special sessions, 18 regular sessions (14 oral sessions and 4 poster sessions), 6 tutorials, and a Ph.D. forum. There are also two sets of special overview sessions; one from authors of the 10th year APSIPA magazine and the other one is on Big Data. In addition, as part of the celebration for the 10th year of the APSIPA ASC, we are pleased to have a special Presidential forum where the current President, President elect, and past Presidents of APSIPA will give their reflections on the first 10 years of APSIPA and their perspectives for the future. We will also have a special social event at the conclusion of the APSIPA ASC to celebrate the 10th year of the conference. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all authors, reviewers, session chairs and special session organizers for their contributions to the conference. Special thanks are due to our sponsors for their contributions to the APSIPA ASC. Finally, we thank Billene, Lance and the Conference Management Services team.

Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, is a special place. Oahu is sometimes called “The Gathering Place”. It is the third largest of the Hawaiian islands and the most populous of the islands with a population of about 950,000. It is home to a diverse population with a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures intermingled with the culture and tradition of the Native Hawaiian people. Honolulu is one of the most popular international travel destinations with its tropical climate, gentle ocean breeze, glimmering blue oceans, golden sandy beaches, emerald valleys, and numerous volcanoes. There is a wealth of activities to explore from outdoor activities (hiking, swimming, golf, snorkeling, surfing) to cultural activities (museums, shows, festivals), to simple relaxation on the beach. There is also a wealth of international and local cuisines with a range of choices from top-rated international restaurants to tasty meals at casual cafes and food trucks.

We hope that you find this conference enjoyable and memorable. Enjoy your stay in Honolulu here in the beautiful state of Hawai’i.

Once again, E Komo Mai and a warm Aloha,

General co-chairs
