On behalf of the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA), it is my great pleasure and honor to welcome each of you to the APSIPA Annual Summit and Conference 2020 (APSIPA ASC 2020), to be held fully virtually from December 7 to 10 2020. APSIPA ASC 2018 marked the 10th anniversary of this conference and was held in its birthplace, Hawaii, where the idea of APSIPA was first discussed during IEEE ICASSP 2007. This year’s conference will be the 12th one organized by APSIPA. On behalf of the Association, we take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed their dedicated effort to make APSIPA a great success. APSIPA just turned 12 years old, which is one cycle in Oriental culture. We are happy to start a new cycle of our Association with all of our members. We confident that APSIPA will continue to thrive and evolve, and will provide ever greater leadership to the signal and information processing R&D community.
We have decided to hold APSIPA ASC 2020 as a fully virtual conference for the first time due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic and resulting travel restrictions. We believe this decision will be beneficial to all conference participants in terms of ensuring their safety and well-being. We also embrace this is an opportunity not only to welcome attendees who may not have been able to participate before due to long travel distances but also to prepare for a new conference format in the future. We are excited for the opportunity to innovate by creating an engaging virtual conference that will be rewarding for both presenters and attendees.
I sincerely thank the conference organizers, led by the General Co-Chairs: Prof. Waleed Abdulla, Prof. C.-C. Jay Kuo, Prof. Tatsuya Kawahara and Prof. Sing Kiong Nguang. I would also like to thank the keynote speakers, the invited speakers, the authors and all the participants for their support. We hope that everyone attending the conference will enjoy themselves, and make new friends on this occasion. Finally, if you have any thoughts or suggestions for APSIPA activities, please feel free to direct your comments and inquiries to us. We look forward to actively working with many people, and to furthering technological progress in the Asia-Pacific region.
Together, we will make this APSIPA ASC 2020 a successful event!
Hitoshi Kiya
President (2019-2020), APSIPA
