APSIPA Open Access Book Series
Aims
APSIPA is launching the APSIPA Open Access Book Series in collaboration with the NOW Publishers and Springer publisher. By publishing a book through the APSIPA Open Access Book Series, authors can benefit from increased visibility, faster production, and no production fee. These books can be textbooks, multi-author edited volumes, research monographs, etc. APSIPA will support all production fees and share the revenue with the authors. Also, APSIPA Editorial Board will support the peer review process and manage the production process with the publishers. At least one author of each of the books must be an APSIPA member, and they can choose the publisher and the mode of publication.
Proposed arrangements between APSIPA and Authors
-
APSIPA will pay all the publication fee.
-
APSIPA can also provide financial help for language editing, with an amount of US$ 1,600 ~ US$ 2,500.
-
APSIPA will share the book’s copyright with the authors.
-
The royalties received will first be used to cover the language-editing costs, then the royalties will be shared by APSIPA and the authors in the ratio of 50:50.
Proposal Submission
We invite prospective authors to submit the title, authors, book types (textbook, research monograph, handbook, multi-author edited book, etc.), contents, and a sample chapter. Also, please provide a one-page description of the aim and importance of the book. Please provide these materials in a free format to the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Nam Ik Cho, via email to nicho@snu.ac.kr. When the proposal is accepted, the manuscript for the peer review needs to be submitted within eight months from the acceptance notification.
Book Processing Charge and Revenue Sharing
The cost for publishing a book and open access management usually take high cost, for example, see https://www.springer.com/gp/open-access/books/faqs
or https://www.nowpublishers.com/home/HomeOAPolicy.
By publishing a book through the APSIPA Open Access Book Series, APSIPA will take care of publication charges, contracts with the publishers, and publication processes, including the book review. The authors need not pay any charge; instead, APSIPA and authors share the revenue of book sales and open access charges.
Selection of Book Type and Publication Model
The publishers generally categorize book types as Text Book, Research Monograph, Multi-Author Edited Book, etc. There are several types of publication modes listed below, from which the authors can choose one. But, the publisher and APSIPA may also decide the publication type after reviewing the Book Proposal. The publication is basically Open Access, but if the book has a high sales potential, then the publisher may consider both printed and open access versions.
Publication Models
nowOpen Model: intended for decent research books, which have a sales potential of between 0 - 500 copies, and for which the authors want the book to be published as Open Access. APSIPA is offered 30% royalties on sales of the print copies, plus 50 (fifty) complimentary copies of the print book published in color and hardcover. After deducting the language editing fee, this is shared with the authors. The authors only need to send us source files of their manuscript, and we will do the rest.
nowOpen Partner Model: meant for books with a high sales potential, for example, textbooks. Despite having the eBook version available as Open Access, we predict that the print version of these books will still sell over 500 copies. They will therefore generate good revenue for both the authors (and the APSIPA) and the publisher. Because of this high revenue generation from print sales, we can offer a 50% revenue share for the APSIPA. After deducting the language editing fee, the revenue is shared with the authors. These books will be available in Open Access (which many researchers and their institutions find important), as well as in print, with the authors receiving exceptionally high revenue share from print sales. The authors need to prepare the final print-ready version of the manuscript using our guidelines.
Springer Open Access Model: Springer pays one-time remuneration for both printed and open access versions or pays APSIPA one-time remuneration for all forms of distribution + additional X% royalties on individual distribution (print copies and eBooks) above Y copies sold. After deducting the language editing fee, the revenue is shared with the authors.
* For all the models, APISPA pays publication charge, conduct review process, and help language editing.
